Employees of Finance and Credit Bank detain a fraudster with a false ATM keypad overlay

10.02.2011

press-release

Cash withdrawal through an automated teller machine enjoys popularity not only among payment card holders, but it also attracts attention of payment card fraudsters.

On January 24, 2011, the employees of Card Business Security Department and Security Department of Finance and Credit Bank successfully conducted a special operation near one of the Bank's ATMs in Kiev. As a result of well-coordinated actions, the offender was tracked down, caught red-handed, identified and passed on to representatives of law-enforcement authorities. The criminal located a false keypad overlay above the actual keypad with purpose of carrying out illegal money transactions.

According to Head of Card Business Security Department in Finance and Credit Bank Oleg Shevchuk: "Security of our Clients' funds is a compulsory aspect of ensuring security in our Bank, that is why we make every effort to maintain confidentiality and integrity of information on clients and their funds. This is the first time in Ukraine that a criminal has been caught red-handed with a false keypad overlay. I hope this will teach others a lesson".

Detention of the criminal became possible thanks to the security awareness of the Bank's employees who noticed an unusual ATM front panel and timely reported their suspicions to the Card Business Security Department .

This is not a one-off event of intercepting card fraudsters by employees of Finance and Credit Bank.

There was another wrongdoer who was arrested on January 21, 2010 in Kharkov region. He concluded an acquiring agreement with the Bank. After the payment terminal had been installed, the fraudster performed several illegal transactions through fake payment cards. He was arrested by militia men on the signal from the Bank's security department.

November 28, 2010, militia men arrested a criminal near an ATM belonging to Finance and Credit Bank in Kremenchug on the signal from employees of the Bank's Card Business Security Department. He was illegally withdrawing cash from a card account of one of Russian issuing banks.

Here are some recommendations from the Card Business Security Department for you not to become a victim of a card fraudster: Try to carry out transactions through the same ATM machine (nearest to your home, work, or in the bank outlet), the exterior of which you know well. If there is a new dubious device on the ATM front panel, you will notice that. Before you perform a transaction through the ATM, check the panel carefully. If the ATM exterior causes you to be suspicious, don't perform a transaction through it and immediately report to the bank this ATM belongs to. As a rule, there are Contact Center phone numbers indicated on the ATM. Remember to keep your payment cards separately from the PINs to them. Keep the phone number of your bank's Contact Center in your cell phone. In case your card is lost or stolen, you can block it immediately.
