Going down the Danube, just approaching Vienna, you can get into the small town Closternburgh, which is situated around the ancient Abbey on the hills, overviewing the Danube valley. Since 1114 the monks, sticking to the Saint Augustine`s canons, have lived here.
Saint Augustine’s Abbey in Closternburgh was founded in 1114 by the margrave Leopold III (afterwards sainted). The legend says that Leopold`s wife, Agness, lost the very expensive scarf in the capful of wind, this scarf was found some years later by Leopold, who was hunting. The legend says that the virgin Maria`s vision led him to the foundation of the Abbey in that exact place. The legend, certainly, remains only the romantic story, though this scarf still exists and is kept in the museum of the Abbey.
The Saint Leopold is buried in the crypt of the head church under the wing altar, consisting of 45 gilded and enameled frescos, depicting the scenes from the Bible and dated by the end of Õ²² century.
During the Reformation epoch the Abbey turned out to be neglected and devastated, however it was reconstructed and fortified for military aims. In 1683 this fortified construction played its invaluable role in the victory over the Turkish army, besieging Vienna. Closternburgh was also besieged, but with the help of the inhabitants and artillery it managed to repulse an attack of Turks without the outward help.
In 1730 the Emperor Charles VI visited Closternburgh and decided to restore the Abbey as a court complex in Baroque taste, consisting of the four yards and seven luxurious halls, uniting Saint Augustine`s Abbey with the residence of the emperor (by the model of the Spanish monarch`s residence by Madrid). The unexpected death of the Emperor in 1740 put an end to the construction and till this day all Closternburgh has remained the unfinished work in Baroque taste with the only one competed internal yard.
The most destroying blow to the Abbey was delivered in ÕÕ century by Nazi. In 1941 it was dissolved: some monks were sent out, some of them were sent to the regular army and the rest of them was put into prisons or shot down for the reason of the support of the underground movement against the Nazi.
Today Closternburgh numbers 47 lay brothers and monks. The Abbey museum, attracting the thousands of tourists every year, has been reconstructed and extended lately. Like the majority of the Abbeys of Austria, Closternburgh can by right be proud of the impressive collection of the works of art, books, coins and medals as well as of the well-known wine-cellars.
